White but Not Quite? – Develop Awareness of Invisible Categories of Discrimination

  • Fri, 21.06.2024
  • Sat, 22.06.2024
PIASTA, Rentzelstraße 17, conference room on the ground floor, How to find us, Accessibility information

Some categories on the basis of which people are discriminated against are not outwardly (immediately) recognizable and those affected may pass as White. But then the discrimination they experience is often denied, both by other disadvantaged groups and by the privileged majority.

At this workshop, we will take a closer look at categories of discrimination as well as the concepts of white and whiteness. We will focus on the history of racism in Germany and ask ourselves whether and/or how the terms white and whiteness are translated into the German language and reality. How can people with an immigrant background or refugee status or even Jewish people understand themselves within a blackwhite dichotomy? And what insights do we arrive at when we adopt an intersectional perspective?

Even if we don’t have clear answers to all of these questions, we want to open a space for discussion and reflection. We will look at the breadth of the spectrum together and in this way become aware of the usual blind spots in discourse and our own thinking.

The workshop is aimed at all students, whether or not they feel affected by various forms of discrimination.

Learning objectives:

  • increase awareness for all forms of discrimination
  • focus on solidarity with and between marginalized communities
  • reflect on your own positioning and positionality
  • Practical plans of action: What can I do?
  • Empowerment
