Antisemitism 2.0: What is Really New about the “New” Anti-Semitism?

Anti-Semitism in Germany is often seen only as part of the country’s Nazi-era history and in the context of current anti-racism debates is then classified as an archaic and “mild” form of racism. However, events such as the attack on the synagogue in Halle, hate speech at anti-vax demonstrations, and anti-Semitic slogans in the discourse on the Middle East conflict show time and again that it is not a relic of a past. Anti-Semitism continues to shape the reality of Jewish people today – partly in traditional narratives and stereotypes, and partly in modern codifications and projections onto Israel.

In our workshop, we will look at both the history of anti-Semitism and its modern manifestations in Germany. We want to investigate the continuation of traditional anti-Semitic stereotypes and find out how new the “new” anti-Semitism really is. In doing so, we will focus in particular on anti-Semitism on the Internet, anti-Semitism related to Israel, and anti-Semitic conspiracy myths. And we will examine the connections between racism and anti-Semitism as well as anti-Semitism in left-wing progressive circles.

We invite all students – with or without prior knowledge or a personal connection – to meet with us and discuss and reflect together on this complicated issue.

Learning objectives:

• gain an overview of historical and modern manifestations of anti-Semitism
• learn to recognize anti-Semitic narratives and “detour communication”
• become aware of the realities of discrimination against Jewish people
• reflect on your own positioning and actions
• think together about ways to help spread awareness of anti-Semitism and racism
