Interfaith tour: Visit to the Afghan Hindu community

Religion has been shaping cultures around the world for centuries. With PIASTA, you can learn about the world’s religions and their cultural backgrounds on site. Just like every semester, we invite you to join us on an interfaith journey through Hamburg. Come with us to visit faith communities, churches, mosques, and other places of religious life. Hamburg is a major international city and as such offers a broad spectrum of religious communities. And as the largest city in northern Germany, Hamburg is a crossroads of many cultures and religions.

This semester, we will visit the Afghan Hindu community. In the 1980s and 1990s, numerous Hindus from Afghanistan escaped to Germany, primarily to Hamburg. In 1991 the Hindu Tempel und Afghanischer Hindus Gemeinde e. V. was founded and grew under the aegis of Dr. Narinder Kumar Goswami. Today, the congregation comprises roughly 2,500 Hindus from northern Germany—one of Germany’s largest Hindu associations.

We will meet members of the congregation and gain some insight into their community life. In addition to sightseeing and getting lots of information, you can exchange ideas with other students and will have enough free time to chat and make new contacts.

After the tour, we would like get something to drink and talk about the visit.

The important thing in advance: In Hinduism, alcohol consumption and smoking are prohibited, so we ask you to respect this tradition and not to drink alcohol or smoke in the temple. It is also important not to consume alcohol before visiting the temple on the day. In addition, food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided by the congregation after the tour.

Language: The event will be held in German and/or English, feel free to participate in whichever language works for you. Our team of tutors will also be happy to speak with you in many other languages!
