Every person shall have the right freely to express and disseminate his opinions in speech, writing and pictures and to inform himself without hindrance from generally accessible sources.’ (Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany of 23 May 1949, Art. 5, para. 1)

Everyone has the right freely to participate in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific advancement and its benefits.’ (UN Declaration of Human Rights of 10 December 1948, Art. 27, para. 1)

Public libraries make an important contribution to the realization of the equal right of all people to education and culture. With openness and enlightenment, they work against elitism and exclusion.

The Humanities Library in the Philosophenturm is taking part in the Diversity Weeks with a collage on the ‘Right to a Library’ and a selection of media from the library's collection that encourages a discussion of group-related misanthropy. With various historical and general facts about each focal point we want to encourage interest and deepen the engagement.

Book displays with the following focal points invite you to read and deepen your knowledge:

- Anti-Semitism: Literary treatments (3rd floor)

- Banned Books - Verbotene Bücher (4th floor)

- Queer reading in Eastern Europe and the Romanic world (5th floor)

- Colonialism and Racism, curated by the Research Centre ‘Hamburg's (post-)colonial legacy’ (6th floor)

*** The book tables will be open from October 28 to November 30, 2024, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Feel free to stop by! ***

(Note: The media on display can only be borrowed again after 30 November. Please speak to the library staff if you are looking for related titles.)
